The other is an award given to Bagby in May 1972 by the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences in appreciation of his work and dedication to the field of photography. Robert C. Bagby (1896-1972) was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on October 16, 1896. After graduating from Springfield High School in 1914, Bagby attended the Illinois College of Photography. He graduated in 1916 and moved to New York City where he worked for Stadler Photographic Company. In 1933, Bagby left Stadler to open his own commercial photography business, Robert Bagby Inc. It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
